It’s not like you were shipping anything fragile, like a HARD DRIVE.
Yeah, I know the drive has its own packing material in that little box, but still...

Pretty sure that’s actually worse than just shipping it in the original box. Good work.

In unrelated news, my second Seagate 4GB external drive failed. Not sure why I bought another of the same type to replace the first one, guess it was cheap. The older drive failure was intermittent, so I’ve put it back in use while I search for a cheap replacement. Would be nice if the whole spinning disk industry (which is down to basically two companies) wasn’t a nest of shady shit and poor reliability... Maybe I should just bite the bullet and get an external SSD.

I recommend looking at Backblaze’s reliability reports. They have detailed stats on lifespans on the drives they use.

This showed up on my doorstep today. Of course the UPS person didn’t bother to ring the bell, and of course the panels inside were dented. Luckily I only need a section from each panel.

I’d be thrilled to have a 4TB external M.2.
$100 HDD + reasonably tough external enclosure is better than prebuilt in my experience. $700 SSD + reasonably tough external enclosure would operate at USB 3.1 Gen 2 speeds.
